“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
We wrestle – these two words express the intensity of every believer’s struggle against an unseen but very real adversary. Face-to-face, hand-to-hand – one man exerting his entire force and strength against another – describes the spiritual battles you and I face.
Beware, Satan’s opening moves are subtle.
The first line of defense is education on Satan’s tactics, particularly those involving people. Our adversary wants us to believe the opponent is our spouse, boss, or the guy next door – anybody but him. Think again. Behind those conflicts, spiritual forces are stoking the flames of strife and animosity.
If we want to win, we must develop a countermeasure. In the ancient world, wrestlers oiled their bodies to prevent their opponent from finding a way to secure the upper hand. This strategy has powerful spiritual applications as well.
Resolve to anoint your mind and coat your heart with specific Bible verses that apply to your battle. Are you angry? Ephesians 4:26-27 says, “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil.” Don’t nurse anger, don’t indulge it; deal with it. Do you need to forgive someone? Lack of forgiveness is a handhold of the enemy, too – deny him access! (Ephesians 4:32)
Allow the Holy Spirit to anoint your life with truth, and you’ll become agile, able to avoid your adversary’s grip. He can maneuver all he wants, but there won’t be anything to grab onto to pin you down. And that is a victory!
Awaiting His return,
